Dorian Grilley, executive director of Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota, is recovering from injuries he suffered when the bicycle he was riding was struck by a car at the intersection of Hadley Avenue North and the Gateway State Trail in Oakdale.

Grilley, of Mahtomedi, listed in fair condition Tuesday at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, was to undergo two surgeries on his shoulders this week, according to a Facebook posting by his wife, Margie. She said the helmet he was wearing probably saved his life.

The accident occurred about 5:10 p.m. Thursday just south of Minnesota 36, according to Oakdale police.

A police spokesman said a northbound car driven by Cynthia Riemenschneider, 54, of Oakdale struck Grilley and his bike as Grilley was traveling east on the trail and crossing the intersection.

Riemenschneider, who reported she did not see Grilley until the accident occurred, estimated she was traveling 10 to 15 mph. Because vehicles are required to stop for bicyclists and pedestrians at the intersection, she was cited for a right-of-way violation.

The Oakdale police spokesman said accidents involving bicycles and vehicles at that intersection are rare.

The Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota is a nonprofit bicycle education and advocacy organization.
