How many people are riding? How many are walking? Where?
From our friends at Transit for Livable Communities - two Google maps showing the results of the 2008 bicycle and pedestrian counts held throughout our metropolitan region.

Map showing bicycle counts is here >
The counts are taken during a two hour period from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Tuesday September 9 and Wednesday September 10, 2008.
Using the Met Council's Travel Behavior Inventory and accepted methodology, these two hour volumes can be used to derive an average daily bicycle or pedestrian volume.
For the case of the bicycle counts, approximately 17% of the total number of bicycle trips at a location is estimated to take place during these two hours. To derive an average daily bicycle traffic total, simply multiply the two hour figure by 100 and divide by 17.
For example, in the SW LRT trail near St Louis Park, a total of 382 cyclists were counted during the two hour period. The total number of bicycles traveling through that location would be (382 x 100) / 17 = 2,247 (!)
The counts help demonstrate the growing need for bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure in our region, and will provide support for making these improvements.
