Bike and pedestrian counter technology

Obtaining accurate counts for non-motorized travel is a task presently conducted by hand and requiring staff or volunteer time. In contrast, motorized vehicle counts are almost entirely automated (obtained by the use of pressure tubes across a road, for example).
How many people are riding? How many are walking? Where?
